Local Mean Time

This is what the time would be if you had your own time zone based on where you are right now. Drag the marker on the map to see what the time would be if you were somewhere else

What is this?

Before railway schedules made it necessary to synchronize time across towns and cities, local areas would maintain thier own time zones based on the position of the sun. This meant that the neighboring town could have a slightly different time to yours. This was called Local Mean Time.

This map shows what that time would be for your location or wherever you drag the marker to, this is calculated using the longitude of the position. For each degree of longitude you travel east or west, the local time changes forwards or backwards by four minutes respectively.
